My "Scottish ' Torch Song '," this was the other of the two songs "not mainstream enough to sell", I took it from a poem called "The Tryst" by William Soutar. Didn't know it had already been done, the words went with a melody I had written, it was a perfect fit. | MP3.com CD: Bardsong - buy it!

Story Behind the Song
Lu'ely, Lu'ely (Tune & Arrangement: Zoe Alexander) I'd had a tune kicking around in my head with no words to go with it, but that was solved by opening Antonia Fraser's Scottish Love Poems. The book literally fell open to that page, and it was just what I needed. Soutar had, of course, written it from a man's point of view, and it was much too short to be a true Scottish ballad. I quickly took care of that. I did not know it had already been done, until I sang it for Ian Benzie of Old Blind Dogs, he said he'd never heard it done that way. He started to play the other version, but stopped, put down the guitar, and said he liked mine better. I have since heard the other version done by Jean Redpath, and while that one is charming and follows the original poem precisely, I am still rather attached to mine.
