Story Behind the Song
It is said to write about what you know. I thought I knew my former wife until she revealed her capacity for deceit and betrayal. The melody came while driving in parking lot. I had the lyrics but rewrote them in on a flight to Amsterdam. Of course it is part cathartic, part feel-good divorce anthem you can hum along to.
Lyrics
Let's walk along the beach
'til we're out of reach
and no one can save you
then for a little while
you'll cry all the while
down the road I paved you
try standing on your own
this is not your home
this is what she said to me
as I wondered why she called it clarity
Yeah, thought I had a life
husband, home and wife
thought it was forever
bumps come along the way
to this very day
never thought of never
funny never had a doubt
always worked it out
always moving forward
sad how I never know
'til she told me no
you were never meant for me
tell me darling do you call it clarity?
everytime you go there
feelings are the same
wrapped up in emotions
of love, loss and blame
thought no one could hurt you
swore it was a dream
you bet on it, you kill for it
and never come clean
so wash yourself, rid yourself
nothing holds you back
whole life is ahead of you
time to get on track
time to leave the past behind
she's over you and shares none of the blame
so claim, claim, claim...
Feel no less wiser now
still I wonder how
I dug deep and bought it
sold to the highest bid
who was I to kid?
who was I to claim it?
truth, nothing's set in stone
still I'm free to roam
free to write it over
hot right out of the gate
leaving it to fate
pay and pull the lever
skin toughend by the burn
and the lessons learned
leave me with a question
tell me, now do you call it clarity?
I want to know
tell me, darling did you find your clarity?
I want to know
tell me, tell me have you lost your clarity?
I want to know...
