"I dreamed about the Inundation and the waters of re-creation."

    Story Behind the Song

There were three seasons in the year of the Ancient Egyptians. The first of these seasons was Akhet, or the Inundation.

The Inundation was a natural phenomenon that swelled the river Nile with rainwater from monsoons in Ethiopia, bringing life-giving water at the hottest time of year. It came every year in the burning days of mid-July, the Dog Days, when Sirius appeared above the horizon at the same time as the sun. The Nile, rising up, covered the plains with water nearly five feet deep for over six hundred miles, soaking the dry, cracked earth with rich, moist soil, and transforming Egypt into a sea, likened to the primordial waters of Nun.

During the Inundation, the Egyptians went about on the Nile in boats of papyrus. It was a time for relaxation, for repairing tools or making new ones for the plowing that would come in the following season (Peret, or the Emergence), when the flood waters would recede and the land would emerge, enriched and ready for planting.

The Inundation was a natural and predictable return of the forces that soften the hard, dry soil, enabling it to grow food for the next year. In the eyes of the Ancient Egyptians, the Inundation appeared to be a tangible sign of the divine activity which alone was capable of such a life-giving miracle.

The Nile was thought to have two sources, one in Heaven and one in the Duat (the Other Side). The Inundation was a part of the great cycle of nature, of the principle of eternal return, the flow of natural fertility emerging from the underworld into this world, the upwelling of the power of the Duat into the world. Each year it recalled the mystery of the creation, when all existence suddenly emerged from the cosmic ocean by virtue of a single divine impulse.

The Inundation was also the occasion of a national festival that brought Egyptians to the banks of the Nile into which they cast offerings of food and flowers.

    Lyrics

    Inundation

    I dreamed about the Inundation
    I dreamed about regeneration
    I dreamed about the Inundation
    And the waters of re-creation

Summer days and the sun is strong
Summer time and the days are long
The ground is hard and the earth is dry
    Women stir and babies cry

    I dreamed about the Inundation
    I dreamed about regeneration
    I dreamed about the Inundation
    And the waters of re-creation

Summer days and the sun is strong
Summer time and the days are long
People taking shelter from the sweltering heat
The time is near for the cool and the sweet

    I dreamed about the Inundation
    I dreamed about regeneration
    I dreamed about the Inundation
    And the waters of re-creation

    Four days coming
    Dog star rising
    Sirius, Sirius, Sirius

    It was wet dream
    It was a wet scene

    And dreams flowed
    Dreams flowed
    And dreams flowed
    Dreams flowed
