Story Behind the Song
This song started out with the bass line in the verses, then the various parts
were written for the intro, theme, chorus, and solo section. The lyrics have
changed completely a couple times - it started off about Soup (don't ask),
then was about a Doggy (really, don't ask) before the Elvis lyrics stuck.
2nd guitar solo provided by our friend Andy Altieri.
Lyrics
Part Time Elvis
Music by Jeff Agnew, Lyrics by Jon Bono, copyright 2000
A strange man smiled as he came through the door
With eyes of blue, I swore I’d seen him before
I never thought that I’d meet the King
Is this a trip, some kind of scheme?
He looked up, looked me straight in the eye and said,
"Listen here boy, and don’t ask why
I may be King but I ain’t with God
What I need now is a part-time job!"
He lies in Graceland, they say
He said, "I need a job today
Although I tried to call
Some say that they’ve seen me in the shopping mall"
He said "Don’tcha know boy, I used to be King?
Nowadays that don’t mean a thing.
I just got back from Las Vegas today
Went to the Hilton, they said ‘No way!’
"So I’ve come back out here to L.A.
I’ve got a fresh demo that I need you to play
I’ve come back to reclaim what’s mine
You know my name boy, now where do I sign?"
He lies in Graceland, they say
He said, "I need a job that pays
Although I’ve gone away
Some claim that they’ve seen me at the Circle K"
"Somehow it just don’t seem right
I used to bring the house down every night
Now I’ll be sleeping in my car tonight!
"You know boy, there was a time a man could be proud,
Hold his name up, speak out loud
I used to be famous, now I’m one in a crowd
"So don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true
All I’ve got left are my blues suede shoe
