Story Behind the Song
New Zealand is a long way from anywhere. To get to it you had to arrive by boat ( we are talking two centuries ago here). There is a very strong Maori influence in the country still. They were the earlier inhabitants and when the English arrived, nearing the end of their empire, they negotiated a treaty, heavily weighed towards the English, which has come back and bit them in the bum this past 20 years. I am white, but love my country, as we all do, but I approve thoroughly of the efforts of the Maori people to have stolen land returned and their sovereignty (at least) acknowledged. Maori or European, Aotearoa is the name of our country.
Lyrics
Maori
A utainga mai nga iwi otu motu ki runga whakatu e tau nei
Kahikitia tana iwi kahikitia tana waka
The three mountains are named in the song Aoraki (Mount Cook) Taranaki ( formerly Mount Egmont) Tongriro
English
To the land I was born came the men of the pacific then the men from the north in the tall ships searching
and the river was loud and the forest calling and we chose this land and called it home
and the mountain lakes breathe in with the rhthym of the moon breathe out the rhthym of the heavens
and the air that I breathe is the taste of the breath of the mountain Aorangi Taranaki Tongariro
As I live upon the land and I grow into my history, voices of the past call clearly
and I listen with my heart to the stir of the river and the voice of Tane singing in the Kauri
