    Story Behind the Song
I saw this guy on 42nd street near Times Square in New York City preaching the word of the Lord on a sidewalk.
He was talking through a cheap microphone and an amplifier that was distorting.
I couldn't understand him all that well but the one thing I was able to decipher was he wanted money. I think Bono from U2 said it perfectly in the movie Rattle and Hum..."My god is not short on Cash man!"
Anyways, this song is also inspired by a poem from Stephen Crane. The poem is about an angel who visits a man(probably a civil war soldier) and tells him he should live life more peacefully. The angel gives the man examples on how to be and when he is finished the man tells the angel in no uncertain terms, "That's easy for you to say your an angel!"
This is a one take vocal and the first line that I sang is a mistake but we kept it. The right lyrics are below.

    Lyrics
I was walking through the city
and I was feeling pretty bad
Saw this guy staring up to the sky
and he turned and he said,
"You know the sky is forgiveness
    and the clouds are pain.
    The sun that's your soul
that shines and burns the clouds away
    so have faith and hope.
You got to have a reason to believe."

Well I was feeling kinda vicious
and I was feeling kind of cold
    I said,"Hey cloud minding friend
it's easy to stand there and talk.
Can you find me a job,
    can you pay my rent,
can you make me a star
can you bring back my girlfriend
    on Faith. On hope.
I want to have a reason to believe
    that's all.
I wanna have faith, I wanna have hope
I want to have a reason to believe"

He said," Who's keeping you down?
You don't like this place quit
    hanging around. You're the one
who puts the clouds in the sky.
You decide, You decide, it's up to you
    You decide.

We went down to the river
that flows out to the sea
    Walking along that shore line
my cloud minding friend and me
    he said,
    "The sky is forgiveness
    and the clouds are pain.
    The sun that's your soul
so shine on and radiate some
    faith and hope.
