Story Behind the Song
"Some of this music was conceptualized in a barn loft recording studio in Kentucky. I met a wonderful drummer and friend there. He had a nice space for artisitc sharing, very organic. We worked nearly everyday for about a year creating together. At this time, I was also experiencing some new philosophical insights, I had just been introduced to the great wisdom from high Tibetan Lama's. This happened to coincide with a period where I also fell in love with Latin Jazz. I began writing several pieces in the Latin Jazz style. I used the play on words of Lama/Llama and thus the title for this piece. It very well could have been "Llama Spirits" too. My Kentucky friend, Gary Underwood helped me produce and record a rhythm track. There are still some of his tracks present. Later, NYC drummer Pat Petrillo played on the session along with Weather Report percussionist, Jose' Rossy. Unfortunately, the engineer that miked Jose' did not know percussion miking techniques well and gated them, thus removing all but the accented notes and ruining his beautiful tracks. Therefore; I had to mix them down, conga should have been very present. I may rerecord percussion and add an alto sax with the melody and solo's, and of course remix. All in all, I think this track still has a nice feel. Thanks for stopping by and listening, Love Peace & Joy,
Garius Hill
