WE ALL NEED to hear this one! |

Story Behind the Song
I hope I don't lose any friends over this one! The Lord gave me this song to help me stay focussed in the ministry. It is such a struggle at times, just meeting the costs of doing an album and trying to stay on track with the purpose of it all. After discovering mp3.com ( the best thing to happen to me in years! ) I soon found myself caught up in the promotional game of "trade plays" and getting others to "click on me". It never felt good from the start. But with everybody else doing it and my stats yelling, you're a loser if you don't ", I soon found myself playing the game. But in the midst of all this "game play" ( the phrase as mp3.com has coined it ) there was this constant gnawing away in the back of my mind...."Why am I doing this? to bless others or to get them to bless me? Do I really care about this person, or do I just want them to help me get promoted in the charts?" Ouch! I had joined the mp3.CON game.
The players are everywhere, and the disguises are varied and many. Take for example the number of emails I have had from other artists wanting me to "review" their songs! Or emails from pseudo fans complimenting me on my latest song ( which they obviously haven't heard ) and then, "oh, by the way, don't forget to "click on me". Or how about this thinly-disguised plea for stardom: "Let's get this gospel song to #1 on the secular charts - the world needs Jesus." Right, but if there was a window on both sides of your heart would the world see Jesus?
Just recently, a friend of mine sent me an article on ministry and money, and it so powerfully convicted me that I immediately wrote a song on the subject. MP3.com initially placed the song "on hold" for "inappropriate content" but later reconsidered! The song is not meant as a criticism of anybody or anyone's promotional adventures on mp3.com. It is simply a challenge to consider our motives before doing whatever we do. The message of the song for all of us, I believe, is not about P4P or where our song is placed on the charts, but is summed up in the simplicity of the closing line: "just make sure your heart is pure, when you click on a song at dot com."
"Do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them. Promotion comes from the Lord! To everything there is a season, and He makes all things beautiful in His time." ( Jer.45:5; Psalm 75:6; Ecclesiastes )
When WE promote ourselves, WE are lifted up, and will quickly fall. When GOD promotes us, HE is lifted up, and WE are ready for it! God alone can rightly determine if we are ready for promotion. We can promote ourselves, but it will be the world's way and there will always be striving and competition with it. It will not bear lasting fruit for the kingdom. Man's striving cannot produce the fruit of the kingdom.
Another issue we should look at is the whole question of focus. We should ask ourselves, "where is my focus?" This is important because focus determines direction. Jesus said, "You cannot serve God and money." In other words, when we begin to focus on the provision for the ministry we lose our focus on the ministry. You cannot have more than one focus - focus by nature is exclusive. You CANNOT serve God and mammon. You cannot effectively serve God AND be concerned about the financial aspect of the ministry. When you take a photograph of something you can only bring one object into sharp focus. You cannot see both the foreground and the background clearly. If you want your ministry to be in the forefront, it must have a clear focus.
If you would like a copy of the article on "money and ministry" you'll find it on my home page http://secretplaceministries.org under Publications/Articles/Money. I believe you'll find it extremely helpful, and a great encouragement if you're struggling financially in ministry.
Lyrics
You can't serve me and mp3,
You can't make money your lord.
Your heart's not free to live for me,
So check where your treasure is stored.
If your treasure is in the things of this world,
Then where does your heart belong?
So just make sure your heart is pure
When you click on a song at dot com.
So just make sure your heart is pure
When you click on a song at dot com.
