    Story Behind the Song
The Edinburgh musician and publisher Robert Bremner published a tutor and tune book for the 'English guitar' or guittar, a small wire strung instrument similar to a mandolin or cittern, but with a delicate sound similar to a spinet or virginals. This is one of the better known Scottish tunes from this book, played exactly as written with some minor variations in phrasing and tempo (the tune is a song, and has been played here as if 'sung') and one minor deviation from the 'dots on paper'. In fact his version is not exactly the same as the tune written for fiddle or pipes, and it is difficult to avoid changing it when playing if you already know the song.

    Lyrics
None are used, but the original song has several sets of words. I prefer Lord Yester's version -
'When Maggie and I were first acquaint
I carried my noddle fu' hie
Nae lintwhite above the green plain
Nae gowdspink mair happy than me
But I saw her most fair and I loo'ed
I woo'd but I made nae great speed
And now I must wander abroad
And lay ma banes far frae the Tweed'.

    Noddle - head
Fu' hie - full high, pronounced 'hee'
    Lintwhite - linnet
    Gowdspink - goldfinch
    Loo'ed - loved
