    Story Behind the Song
Bruised Sky documents the moment when Icarus loses all control and plummets into the sea.

Single Gun Theory tantalizingly used a little drum and bass on their album Flow River of my Soul - this gave me a hint of what could be done with the right combination of sound and rhythm.

    Lyrics
The UN World Food Council convened in Ottawa this fall and confirmed that 50 million people starve to death each year.

Every 8.6 seconds someone in an underdeveloped country dies as a result of illness caused by malnutrition. . . . 10,000 every day. Over 3,500,000 every year.
    - The New York Times of December 29, 1967

From 1600 to 1950 one species of animal, on the average, disappeared per decade. Today the rate is one per year. Plant life is now becoming extinct at the rate of about one species each day. It is feared that in 20 years the extinction of plant and animal life may reach one an hour.

An ominous question: how to dispose of the rising flood of radioactive waste? . . . buried wastes will remain radioactive for thousands of years, some for a quarter of a million years.

Deserts are creeping outward in Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas because of unsound use of land.

Forty years after nations joined together to ensure that all people could live in freedom from fear and want, the real world of the 1980s is one of crushing poverty for at least one quarter of humanity. Deaths related to hunger average 50,000 a day. Yet, the nations spend over a hundred million dollars every hour on war!

It was appalling to me to see how dirty our atmosphere is getting. Unfortunately, this world is rapidly becoming a grey planet. Our environment apparently is flat going downhill. We are fouling our own nest.
    - astronaut Paul Weitz

A third of the natural world has been destroyed by human activity in the past 25 years.
    - World Wide Fund for Nature.

Today tropical rain forests carpet only 5 percent of the earths surface, compared with 12 percent a century ago. And every year an area of forest greater than the size of England, or 50,000 square miles [130,000 sq km], is felled or burned.

The Amazonian rain forest continues to disappear at an alarming rate. In each of the past three years, 4.8 million acres were lost, which equals about "seven football fields a minute," -- - Natural History magazine.

Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. . . . No more than a few decades remain before the chance to avert the threats will be lost.
    - Union of Concerned Scientists

In September 1998, the hole that forms each year in the ozone layer over Antarctica reached an all-time record size. Satellite pictures showed that the hole had grown to some two and a half times the area of Europe.
    - The UNESCO Courier.

We are being confronted by something so completely outside our collective experience that we dont really see it, even when the evidence is overwhelming. For us that something is a blitz of enormous biological and physical alterations in the world that has been sustaining us
    - Ed Ayres, World Watch Magazine
