Story Behind the Song
FARE MY CHILD WELL has a double meaning. I have twelve children, and as most have become teenagers and some have already started families of their own, I've become experienced in the process of letting go. From the child's point of view, there are a few uncertainties about the future, but by and large there is a blissful unawareness of the challenges to come. From a parent's perspective, however, there is both an appreciation of the frailities of life, as well as a sense of loss of the full devotion and loyalty of a young dependent child, now
a young adult. We want our children to do well in life.
The second meaning of the song is really my farewell to all of my children, as someday I will be leaving this life. I want to let them
know they are loved.
