Story Behind the Song
I wrote this in the summer of 1999 for a young woman in Salt Lake City.
Lyrics
A safe place to go
It's no use to hide
I can see in your smile that you're lost,
when you run away from your past
you must pay the cost.
There's no one to read stories now
the little girl is grown,
and with so many lovers you still
don't have a safe place to go.
The fire in your blood needed space
and freedom to breathe,
and promises are chains
you have to break when you leave.
There are so many things
that you still want to know,
and later on it'll be easy
to find a safe place to go.
You didn't mean to be mean,
didn't mean to break so many hearts,
but the music was playing and there's no way
to stop when it starts,
for passion's a drug, and as long as
you're high you're not low,
and even if it's reckless, cruel and unkind,
at least it's some place to go.
Now the night is on fire and
they all want a piece of your soul,
a smile or a kiss,
whatever can be given or sold.
They're all in your power,
they'll do whatever they're told,
and right now the last thing you want
is a safe place to go.
The offers come in
and it's harder and harder to choose,
which one has no strings,
which one is easy to use.
So you pick out a winner
and he takes you back to his home,
and you make believe where you are
is where you wanted to go.
Now you still try to run
but all of your failures remain,
and a year full of lovers and travels
can't hide the pain,
you're always with others
but you feel like you're always alone,
still you think you could make it,
continue to fake it,
if you only had a safe place to go.
