Story Behind the Song
Sara wrote the lyrics as a poem after walking out in a gray, misty evening. In an unplanned collaboration, Carl found the lyrics lying on the kitchen table and set them to music.
Lyrics
I walked tonight in mist, my love,
So perfectly alone.
And as I passed, enfolded there,
My thoughts were all my own.
I moved tonight through mist, my love,
The sky reached down for me --
The softest touch upon my hand --
And I could scarcely see.
I opened wide to mist, my love;
I let it love me well.
I felt its touch upon my heart
Too many times to tell.
I walked abroad in mist, my love;
I pondered who I'd be
Without the anchor of your gaze
Across the room from me.
I wandered in the mist, my love,
And rain began to fall.
If rain, or tears, upon my cheek,
I could not tell at all.
I only knew in mist, my love,
I was myself entire.
To you, my love, I reach across
In wild and sweet desire.
Emerging from the dark, my love,
At home I take my place.
To tell me who I am, I keep
The mist upon my face.
I walked tonight in mist, my love,
So perfectly alone.
And as I passed, enfolded there,
My thoughts were all my own.
