Story Behind the Song
DAVE: Monica and I originally wrote "Say Goodbye" in 1999 as a rather ordinary
pop ballad, and it was going to be our first MP3 release. After a couple of marathon
recording sessions, however, neither of us were happy with the vocals, so we set
it aside to work on something else. When we came back to it this year, however,
I decided the musical arrangement did fit into Ninth Key's repertoire, so I scrapped
it and created a completely different sound, complete with acoustic guitar samples
out the wazoo. The guitar samples were provided by Albert Andres, who also
provided the samples for "Hands of Time", then chopped up and arranged by
Dave into what you hear now. The solo toward the end sounds live at first, but after
a few measures, you'll realize it's all triggered by MIDI. (Interestingly enough, the
guitar samples used in "Hands of Time" were taken from the original "Say
Goodbye" solo Albert recorded in 1999.)
Lyrics
Somewhere I have lost my mind.
Somewhere I have lost your heart.
Something tells me I was blind
not to see the truth from the start.
So just say goodbye, and close the door.
There is nothing left to stay here for.
Just say goodbye, and close the door.
I don't need to see you here anymore.
I look around to see your face.
You've disappeared without a trace.
There's no love left in your eyes.
No tenderness in your embrace.
So just say goodbye, and close the door.
Let me pick my life up off the floor.
Just say goodbye, and close the door.
I don't need to see you here anymore.
Tell me, do I mean so little to you
that you could be so cold so easily?
I don't know how you could treat me this way,
but if you cannot change, then I'll just let you be.
So just say goodbye...
