Story Behind the Song
This was the first original song that we wrote. Michael Margle and I were up late one night in November 1998, when we said "Hey, let's write a song", as if it would be that easy. We sat down with a piece of paper and a pen and tried to think of something to write about. We sat for nearly an hour and nothing came to us. Soon we started writing some corny lyrics that rhymed and sounded interesting and we called it Only Who. Then I took it upon myself to write some music to the words. I put some chords to it, tried it and thought it sounded pretty good.
At that point the song was pretty plain and boring. Patrick Stone then took the song and basically made it into what it is. He started by adding a lead part that was both fluid and catching. Later he came up with a solo inspired by the Allman Brothers song "Jessica". After that we thought the song was really good, but as we kept playing it, we started changing it and making it better and better. Patrick came up with variations on the lead part and Michael and I modified the corny lyrics.
Before Brent Mooreland was in the band we had had trouble developing a bass part. After we taught the basic idea of the song to Brent and told him to just play with it a little bit, he almost immediately came up with a solid bass line. After adding some backing vocals and slightly changing the way the song was sung we considered it complete and recorded it. I still think there are changes in the future of this song, though.
