Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song in the summer of 1996. At the time I was going through a difficult period; my wife was leaving me. I loved her more than life itself but I was acutely aware of her increasing dependence on alcohol and of how easy it was for her to lie to me and to herself. Hence the line "I am always lying to make up for lying." I guess I was trying to put myself in her shoes and write a song sort of based on alcoholism. I remember writing that first line soon after a phone conversation my wife had with her mother who was struggling with the same issues. But eventually the lyrics began to point directly at me because even though I hate it I sometimes find myself lying to myself and to others to save face. I had to realize my own shortcomings and that as the leader of my household I had failed miserably, maybe even driving Lisa to drink more. That's the way most of my songs are anyway. They might start off being about someone else but in the end they are usually about me and my own screw ups.
In my life I have always been late. Late for school, work, picking up people from work, whatever. I've always found myself saying I'm on my way. Whether it be for a specific occasion or simply in the evolution of my life; on my way. I always mean well(how I always want to be there) but I'm still just on my way.
I am a Christian so my songs usually come from that perspective. One of the lyrics is "follow I AM send me on my way". When I sing I AM I'm singing of who God told Moses that he was. Moses asked the burning bush who it was and God answered "I AM THAT I AM". So what I'm saying is that I just want to follow God , be a good boy, do what I'm supposed to do ,that kind of thing.
"When will I learn that it never pays to burn that" refers to my own struggles with ciggies but it can refer to any vice I have which I suppose are many.
That was a hot period for me as far as songwriting goes so the lyrics and the music came together quite easily. I remember finishing it up one night sitting in a toll booth at the airport where I worked third shift, after a frustrating phone call with Lisa. Even though there's a lot of pain involved in the writing of the song it is one of my favorites.
The quality is so poor because I didn't have access to any real recording gear at the time but I wanted to get it on tape so I did it on a karoke machine. Even though the sound is not what it could be I think I captured the freshness and the right feel that I wanted. I overdubbed the bass and the background vocal and that was it; no drums, only because I didn't have any and I hate electronic drums. I'm pretty proud of the bass part though.
Well that's it. I hope you like "On My Way" as much as I do.
Lyrics
ON MY WAY
I AM ALWAYS LYING
TO MAKE UP FOR LYING
WHEN WILL I LEARN THAT
IT NEVER PAYS TO BURN THAT
I AM OVER CRYING
CAUSE I AM ALWAYS TRYING
BUT I NEVER SUCCEED
AND I'M NEVER SET FREE
FROM ME
I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE IT TO THE TOP
I WOULD LIKE TO WIN
I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE IT TO THE TOP
I WOULD LIKE TO
BE WHO I AM SEND ME ON MY WAY
FOLLOW I AM SEND ME ON MY WAY
BOTHER NO MAN SEND ME ON MY WAY
AND BE THERE
HOW I ALWAYS WANT TO BE THERE
HOW I ALWAYS WANT TO BE THERE
ON MY WAY ON MY WAY ON MY WAY
I AM ALWAYS YEARNING
AND I'M NEVER LEARNING
ALL FROM MY MISTAKES
AND HOW MY MIND QUAKES
I AM ALWAYS SINNING
AND I'M NEVER WINNING
KEEPS ME FROM KNOWING
JUST WHERE I'M GOING
OH ME
I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE IT TO THE TOP
I WOULD LIKE TO WIN
I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE IT TO HE TOP
I WOULD LIKE TO
BE WHO I AM SEND ME ON MY WAY
FOLLOW I AM SEND ME ON MY WAY
BOTHER NO MAN SEND ME ON MY WAY
AND BE THERE HOW I ALWAYS WANT TO BE THERE
HOW I ALWAYS WANT TO...............
