Story Behind the Song
That very time I saw (but thou couldst not) Flying between the cold moon and the earth Cupid, all arm’d. Oberon tells Puck where he saw Cupid’s arrow miss its maiden mark and hit a milk-white flower instead. The flower, now ‘purple with love’s wound’, has the magic properties Oberon needs for his mischievous trick.
