Story Behind the Song
The evening’s ‘lazy time’, as Theseus puts it, is being beguiled by a rendition of the play of Pyramus and Thisby. This is performed by what Philostrate, Master of the Revels, calls ‘hard-handed men’. These simple-minded players with dutiful intentions are namely Bottom, Quince, Flute, Snout, Snug and Starveling, the craftsmen of Athens. The performance is, not surprisingly, a shambles, but Theseus shows grace in respecting the players’ enthusiasm. At the end of the play within a play, Moonshine exits as Pyramus lies dead on the stage. Hippolyta is curious to know how Thisby is to find her lover without any light. Theseus gives her an answer: “She will find him by starlight.”
