Story Behind the Song
"opening..." is the first track to be released from our new album, tentatively entitled "cell," and is also the "opening..." track. More details as time passes, but basically this is our first attempt at a, dare we say, "thematic album" (a euphemism for --ack!-- "concept album"). That is, if you discount Matt's senior project in college. The overall (choke) concept won't be elaborated on here, but the musical premise is this: "Varying arrangements of several recurring, and at times entertwining, 'themes' (or 'motifs' to people with music degrees that are collecting mold in the closet) to create a narrative whole" (koff--bullshi--ahem). For example, the low strings at the beginning of "opening..." hint at the chords to our old favorite, "Mark the Ham Sandwich." And that progression is later interpolated into another theme (from a different tune altogether) to become "...reMark" (not yet released). Then, the melody from "On the Heights," here in 4/4 time at 41 bpm, is used for "Down from..." (also not yet released) in 6/4 at 100 bpm. THEN a reprise of "Main St." closes the album, this time with different lyrics and a more bashing "traditional guitar-based rock arrangement." And she told two friends...
Lyrics
Back in the land of birthday parties,
and girls you know well that you've never met before.
Back to the unfamiliar house where you live,
and your room where anyone can just walk right in the door.
Where you're seeing your world from an impossible point of view,
and Main Street's rather sunny and warm all year
round.
