Story Behind the Song
Dug out during one of his research trips to Plymouth Central Reference Library. Ned found scant information on John Merrick's, (or Meyrickes)London Greycoats who fought on the Parliamentarian side during the English Civil War. At one point he was very excited to learn that the library held the original battle accounts of the time and place he was interested in so he took a look. Sadly it was accounts as in ten pounds of beef thruppence, muskets four for a sovereign etc...(Not accurate prices! Not quite what he was after either, but fascinating just the same!) So he filled in a few gaps from imagination and the rest as they say, is history.
