Story Behind the Song
The legend of Loreley is the retelling of man's constant yearning for something beyond the grasp of his own mortality. Loreley is perfection and beauty, but she belongs to nature, and man's desire to possess her can only result in tragedy. She is also a metaphor of the things we can only dream about. When life becomes routine and we become complacent, something inside is always searching for something more, something that makes us feel alive again. This obsession can blind us, and we sill risk everything in the pursuit of something or someone we don't even know. The Rhine is a metaphor for the flow of life, and Loreley is the object of desire outside of that life.
Perhaps a beautiful girl, and deep down you think she isn't meant for you. And you're probably right. But do you possess the wisdom to know? If so, do you possess the self control to refrain from a course of action that will only end in misery? And if you can refrain, will you ever forgive yourself for doing so?
Lyrics
above the rocks where flows the Rhine, is the vision with voice divine. a wreath of stars and flowing white. you draw obsession into the night. sweet siren you sing to me
when night enshrowds the sky. your tragedy wrecks within where flows the Rhine.
where the beauty searched wrapped inside your grace. where obsession takes them into an early grave. where the beauty found hear the crashing sound of the water inbetween. but i'll never reach the shore.
above the rocks she looks at me but in her glance is the tragedy. of the silent death that was waiting for all of those that went before. how this obsession is like insanity but i cannot turn away. and her song still touches me within where flows the Rhine.
but the beauty searched is a beauty I lost.
when I turned away it was I who was afraid. for I understand how they all could fail. such a simple thing in trust for a beauty they can't touch. and the beauty is searched. and the innocence gone. I'll never touch your face and I'll never hear your song. but I really understand why you sat up ther alone. and although it tears me up, I never reached the shore.
