Story Behind the Song
"Where did this song come from?"
In a literature class in high school I was stricken by poetry. Longfellow was one of many including Walton, Poe and some cracker who went by the name of "Mark Twain" - though that's an entirely different story - whose prose fascinated me. This song was originally recorded and all the music written and worked out in September 1996.
"What do the lyrics mean?"
The original prose is in first person but I altered it so that it would fit in with my story. The first verse has a "he" shooting an arrow into the air. The second verse has a "she" breathing a song into the air. The third verse brings these together and they both find what they'd lost with one another. Sick really that I turned it into a sort of love song, but it's the best friendships that become true love, in my opinion.
"And where does this song fit on the next CD?"
"Eternal Elegy" consists of ten individual songs. It's a concept album about a life and someone who learns from this life, learns about the next one. It's based on all that personal stuff about losing my brother, friendships I had and there is this eventual move to a dark, hideous anger in the story. But this song is the first full song in the concept.
Lyrics
He shot an arrow into the air
It fell to earth, he knew not where.
For so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
Chorus:
The Arrow and the Song
Oh to carry you along,
Never to be wrong,
Oh the Arrow and the Song,
Song.
She breathed a song into the air.
It fell to earth she knew not where.
For who has the sight so keen and strong
As to follow the flight of song.
(chorus repeats)
Long, long after, in an oak
They found the arrow, still unbroke.
And the song from beginning to end,
They found again in the heart of a friend.
