Story Behind the Song
Susan and I went to visit
friends who live way out in the country, near Albuquerque. San Pedro
Canyon is basically out in their back yard. When I went out there, I
suddenly felt that I should get my NAM flute and play it there, over the
canyon. I started to play, and I realized that there was a lot of
response out there - a lot of life in that canyon, that had just seemed
like flat scenery moments ago. A rabbit hopped by, then I paused between
phrases because I heard echoes of my sound; then I heard birds singing,
as if in response to my sound. Then, when the group of us started
getting real still, to listen to the response of the sound - suddenly we
could hear more and more sounds: the creek, which sometimes you could
hear, and sometimes not, depending on the wind; and there were other
sounds. It rememded me of all those Carlos Castaneda books I had read
years ago - the spiritual descriptions of the desert. This was the inspiration for the piece.
