    Story Behind the Song
This song is receiving airplay on 92.9, KISM-FM in Bellingham, WA. Please call their toll free request line at 1-800-929-ROCK and ask them to play it.

The song was originally written as a straight rock tune back in 1995. But, in 1998, we put a James Brown-style beat on it, and that's the current version people seem to groove on. During the recording sessions, the producer wanted the lead vocals to "sound a bit like Elvis." At first, nobody in the band like the idea. But, now, the lower, bluesier vocal register seems to give the first verse and chorus a righteous style.

    Lyrics
Once there was a be-boppin' man
who could play guitar with one hand tied behind his back.
Drove from town to town in a Volkswagen bus
and his name was, and his name was

    Velvet Jesus.

Velvet Jesus was a lady's dream
Shakin' what he got while the young girls scream
But late one night in his dressing room
And the critics wrote "too much, too soon."

    Velvet Jesus
    Velvet Jesus

    Don't stand behind me
    Don't stand behind me

    Don't stand behind me
    Don't stand behind me

Little Velvet Jesus had one fatal flaw
He'd always become what the other people saw
    But lately in the underground
They been gettin' down, gettin' down, gettin' down
    To the Velvet Jesus sound

    Velvet Jesus
    Velvet Jesus

Velvet Jesus met a curious fate
Turned water into wine but it was much too late
    Now lately in the underground
They been gettin' down, gettin' down, gettin' down
    To the Velvet Jesus sound.

    Velvet Jesus
    Velvet Jesus

    Velvet Jesus
    Velvet Jesus.
