Story Behind the Song
This song came from a conversation with a friend of mine -- we were both in relationships in which we had to try very hard to keep it going, and we wanted nothing more than to just fall into something perfect. Just have it be there. And at one point, he said to me, "I'm tired of standing up straight." That was it for me. I wrote the song the next day, in about 20 minutes. I realize it's long, but I just had so much to say. I couldn't stop. I think that lyrically, it's one of my best songs. So, friend (you know who you are), I thank you for the constant inspiration.
Lyrics
last night, i settled into you like sleep
i find comfort in these walls
this must be where the angels keep themselves at night
this must be where i feel like i fall
i'll just lie here breathing i don't want to move
i'll just lie here thinking i don't want to speak
there's a fine line here between where i feel and where i hurt
i just want to run to you, run from me
he says, "i've been here a long time now, i should go,
it's getting late
but when the sun goes down, and when the lights go out,
i get tired of standing up straight"
and she says, "wait"
i feel a little useless now, a bit lonely, a bit scared
and i'll admit that i'm losing myself
it's been a long while since i've felt i could feel safe feeling small
but i can't guarantee i'll remember what's supposed to happen now
he says, "i've been here a long time now, i should go,
it's getting late
but when the sun goes down, and when the lights go out,
i get tired of standing up straight"
and she says, "wait"
i want you know i'm feeling useless too
and for the time being i like feeling small
i'll settle into you, if you feel you can settle into me
and i can find comfort like you find comfort in the silence of it all
he says "i've been here a long time now, i should go
it's getting late"
she says, "when the sun goes down, i want to make you feel
like you don't have to stand up straight
cause i know you're tired of standing up straight
and i don't think that it's all that late"
she says "wait"
