Story Behind the Song
'Twas a dark and foggy night on the way home from the Blues jam session at Blues on Grand in Des Moines. I was embroiled in a mental struggle concerning my Algebra II students' lack of knowledge about such things as complimentary angles, absolute values, and the infamous "distance=rate x time" formula. Thus this song was born as I passed the school on the highway back to my motel home. Go ahead...try to understand!
Lyrics
STORY PROBLEM
Well, that time you gave me a compliment, babe
I just knew I had to get the right angle
Yeah, that time you gave me a compliment, babe
I just knew I had to get the right angle
I thought you could supplement my lovin', hon'
But I did a 180 straight into a tangle
Every time I make a move
The way you distance yourself's so unkind
Every time I make a move, pretty babe
The way you distance yourself's so unkind
At any rate, girl
I just can't make me no time
I can't make no time with you, honey
And it's all about distance, rate, and time
[harp: Hart]
Well, it's just less than friendly the way you ignore me
And that's greater than I can bear
Yes, it's just less than friendly the way you ignore me
And that's greater than I can bear
At most you flash me that insincere smile
At least I really know that you don't care
Now the absolute value of all this
Is the physical distance between me and you
Oh, the absolute value of all this, baby
Is the physical distance between me and you
Ain't nobody messed with my mind like you have
This story problem is all about you
