Story Behind the Song
This song was written for Vietnam War Veterans. After interviewing several veterans in a VA hospital, about the war and after they were home, particulary about the MIA/POW issue, this is what I wrote. The song took about 4 days to write. The song just came to me, after talking to all of the Vet's. The first version, on a previous album, we recorded it in one take. The video that followed (it's still out there if you look hard enough...) took us several weeks for the shoot, and over a month of editing.
Lyrics
Twenty dollars will get what you need,
Memories of a life that used to be
A woman waiting with instant gratuities
Whatever happened to the way things used to be?
Driving down the road in a beat up Ford,
Theres a hole in the sky,
And a plague in your home
Half way gone, from where you used to be
Little kids in the street teachin reality
(Chorus)
Did you leave them behind?
Twenty years ago
Do we know the truth?
Or will we ever know?
The sound of thunder,
Puts you back in the hole
The faces of war
Will never let you go.
Cool rain fallin down your face
Mixes with the tears of this place
Maybe tonight will be your night
And youll finally
Set things right.
