The first thing I try to do when I meet a new person is tell them my name, and then maybe a little about myself so that we get to know each other a little right off. This song is about that philosophy of living.

    Story Behind the Song
This is one of the songs I wrote for a vinyl album I did in 1976, and it's been a standard of my live performances ever since. Folks everywhere seem to be able to relate to the message.

    Lyrics
    Well, I remember stealing
'cause my first time... I got caught!
It was just some chocolate candy,
but it wasn't what I'd bought.
Well, I came out feelin' shame-faced,
and I headed for the car ~
But my momma must've seen it,
    (cause that's how "momma's" are.)
    She squared my little shoulders,
and she looked me in the eye,
And even yet ~ I still can hear
    my dear old Mom's reply,

    (Chorus)
"Tell me who you are, Boy.
    Tell me where you're from.
    Tell me where you're goin',
and tell me what you've done.
    Let me look you over.
    Stand there like a man.
Oh, but tell me who you are, Boy,
I'll help you if I can."

Well I made my mind up ~then and there~
that it does not pay to rob!
And the years went by and I thought I
    should get myself a job.
Now, I'd never turned a dollar,
and I was somewhat scared ~
So I went and I asked my daddy
    how to get myself prepared...
"Now, Dad, I've got to meet the Boss,
and I don't know what to say."
And even yet ~I still can hear
    my Daddy's words that day~
"Well, Son ~ (Chorus) He'll help you if he can.

    Now I ain't no philosopher
~ with a full semster load,
And you might say that my degree
was earned out on the road...
    But I've learned that there's a difference
'tween braggin' and 'tween pride ~
    And they're separated, largely
    by the way you feel...inside.
Yes, I maintain that they're different,
but some folks say they're not.
But I say "pride" is who you are,
    while "braggin's" what you've got!
So you ~ (Chorus)Then help them if you can.

So the people on the roadside
    are everywhere the same.
    Some have found their fortunes
while the others found their fame.
But the people always like to meet
    the man that's travelled some
If you'll let them know your name
    and where you're comin' from!
So if you go out travellin'
like lots of people do ~
You just keep this little song
    tucked inside your shoe!
    And then, (Chorus)
Tell 'em who you are, Boy
and then help them if you can!
