Story Behind the Song
This theme comes from a song written by the craziest band I’ve ever seen perform on the San Francisco circuit. Fighting with members of the audience, arguing with one another during songs, and flaunting on-stage drug use, were common during their performances. I remember one tune,in particular: like a mantra they chanted, “Don’t you hate it when your drug dealer’s gone?” This is the song's lyrics in its entirety, and in its breadth. Occasionally they would vary the phrasing with the clever addition of the words, "like" or "fucking," i.e., “Like don’t you hate it when your fucking drug dealer’s like gone?” Opened the theme up a bit, I think.
Lyrics
You know I sure hate it when my drug dealers gone
And he won’t take the time to return my call
God, I can’t stand it when my mind is a mess
And I’m doing my best to fight the withdrawal
Well, I hate it when he’s gone
Time seems to carry on
Nah, it ain’t easy when your drug dealer’s gone
Especially when he won’t take the time to return your call
It’s not easy when I’m pacing the halls
Anxiously awaiting for my dealer to call
Frantic, excited, a school boy in love
My wife gets suspicious that I’m seeing someone
Calling him on the phone
Paging him all day long
Anyway you look at it, it’s not easy when your drug dealer’s gone
Especially when he don’t return your call
Preserving your hope by conserving your smoke
In a place where the winds don’t play
Relaxed with a joint your provoked by the point-
The joint won’t last through the day if it’s burning away
Lying in bed, eyes fixed on the wall
Resigned to the fact that the dealer won’t call
But it’s 3AM when he does call my home
But the wife beats me to it and she screams in the phone
No one’s home! Were asleep.
(Do not hang up)
Leave us alone it’s after three
No it’s not easy when your drug dealer’s gone
And you don’t know when he’ll return your call
