    Story Behind the Song
I was walking to my car and got stopped by a Jehova's witness. I wasn't particularly interested and spent less than a minute in conversation. However, it did seem to make it into the first line of this song written later that week. In retrospect, that interchange sent me into a subconscious analysis of what drives and inspires people to speak and act. And, on the contrary, what forces shut that down in a person. The lyrical content of the song deals with this inspection.
Musically, I had been experimenting in the studio with writing songs to a drums groove. Most of the songs I write are written with guitar or piano with grooves added later. I came up with a cool guitar riff over the groove that is now "Cross To Bear," and the song (melody and lyrics) wrote itself in a few minutes. I laid down a guitar track and then a vocal track both in one take. Then I laid down some "candy" tracks with piano and organ. A few days later, I added some "real" drums, bass, and backing vocals. I did a rough mix and then listened to it for a few months. That was in 1998. In 2000, I was putting together a colletion of songs that I had never released and "re-discovered" this recording. Feeling re-inspired, I had some new ideas and put a few more "candy" tracks on and mixed it with the intention of releasing it on a full length CD.

    Lyrics
I got stopped the other day
By a woman who was stocking up
So she'd be ready for the day that she believed would come
And I sometimes go to church
'Cause I like to hear the choir
No matter how much you sleep and how much that you eat
And how much that you break down
There's a time to be weak
To be top of the heap
To be lost and then be found
    So feel it
    And be it
And steal it back from anyone who tries to bring you down
We've all got our cross to bear
You can hear all of the testimonies from the people
On your TV and your radios
And I sometimes go to church
'Cause I want to be amazed
Not matter how much you preach and how much that you reach
And how much that you break down
There are times to be bad
And times to wish that you had
And times you just want to feel good
    So feel it
    And be it
And steal it back from anyone who wants to bring you down
