    Story Behind the Song
"written late summer 1999 in cincinatti. kind of a retelling of a phone conversation with an old friend the night before. a little bit of my own thoughts tossed in for appearances. i spent a week worrying that i had only rewritten an elliot smith song. i tracked down a copy of his either/or cd to check it out. it wasn't to blatant, but the song's been dilluted since."

    Lyrics
    alison,
i came here tonight just to hear you. to see you, to teach you, to learn from and steal you. my usual friends are with me tonight, all the usual stories and usual lies. i'll wait just a moment while you get the phone. your roomate is pretty and i'm glad she is home. so pass me a beer while i light one more smoke. i'll tell you my life if you'll tell me a joke.

i knew you'd be at home. it's cosmic and karmic and very unknown. but i'll be here with you, we'll sit on the beach at night in santa cruz. and i'll see you through, until we part again.

    alison,
i know you've been on the road to happiness. your mother and hank have just found it themselves. but how is your sister and the three kids named aaron? yours, mine and the one who fools parents. tell me, is your hair still as soft as your voice? and would you be mine if you could make the choice? do the stupid things i say still get you high? and does the malboro man still make you cry?

i knew you'd be at home. it's cosmic and karmic and very unknown. but i'll be here with you, we'll sit on the beach at night in santa cruz. and i'll see you through, until we part again.
