Story Behind the Song
Song Review: Prisoners
Ladies and Gentlemen, Elvis has returned to the building.
As the song came up, I felt myself do a double take. This song could easily have been done by The King in his earlier years. Wayne Walsh has a clear, smooth voice, and this song highlights it very well. And though he does indeed sound like Elvis, it's not in a cheesy, Elvis-impersonator kind of way. It is real. It is Wayne.
"Prisoners" is a slow country ballad, and is really kind of a sad song. Of course, it is about prison; or is it? There seems to be a hint of everyday existence as prison, and that in some way, we are all prisoners. Or maybe it's just how I feel right now.
The mix is quite clear and the production is good. The guitars are essentially clean, with a tad of reverb which is nice. The sweet, soft harmonica in the background adds a lot of ambiance to the overall production, hinting at the lonely cellblock with that one harmonica ringing out from somewhere in the darkness. There is no percussion in "Prisoners," but due to the kind of song it is, this is OK.
The overall feel is one of emotion and sadness. The song is of good quality, and is worth a listen (sorry folks, you can't download this one) if you like this type of music.
