    Story Behind the Song
This song started out as a vain attempt to capture the character of Moore and Gibbons' Dr. Manhattan, one of several protagoninsts in _Watchmen;_ but ended up becoming an incohesive patchwork of quotations and references that lack any real underlying theme and really do an injustice both to the character and the book from which he comes.

    Lyrics
    He's witness to change
    Observes with a cold detachment
If he'd wanted to live on a red planet he should have stayed home
    Knows when to remain
And he knows when the party's over
Makes a quick stop in Arizona on his way over to Mars

    He's watching the stars
    Observing their complex trajectories
The photograph lies in the sand at his feet
    And back behind bars
Walter's seeing things in black and white
And Adrian's plans are one step more complete

    He's well on his way
    When Laurie makes her decision
That blue is too light for television
And someone's been gunning for masks
    And Nova Express
    Is pushing into circulation
A piece to ruin his reputation
    His judgment's already been passed

    According to Glass
    God exists and he's American
A strategic advantage like you've never seen
    No future, no past
The world nearly ended and no one noticed
And the hands are still frozen on Time Magazine

Watchmaker, it seems you've finally arrived
Though it may feel you've been here all the time
Watchmaker, it seems you've finally arrived
Though it may feel you've been here all the . . .

    He's witness to change
    Observes with a cold detachment
If he'd wanted to live on a red planet he should have stayed home
    Knows when to remain
And he knows when the party's over
Makes a quick stop in Arizona on his way over to Mars

Watchmaker, it seems you've finally arrived
Though it may feel you've been here all the time
Watchmaker, it seems you've finally arrived
Though it may feel you've been here all the time
