Story Behind the Song
The lyrics to "Epic" are somewhat of a takeoff on "Rocketman" by Elton John. It was certainly inspired by that song. It follows the same sort of theme, but explores the dark side of such a situation in a more "real" way. In order to get the
more real side of things, the song explores a ficticious situation about a guy who
voluntarily choses to go on a journey into space to save humanity. The
chorus elucidates his deep despair over leaving his loved ones. The verses
tackle the internal conflict over being humanity's savior versus being humanity's dog.
While this is the surface meaning of the song, it is really about the
feelings that a person has when he/she makes a big sacrifice for a cause -
loss of love, loss of stature, loss of friends, etc.
