This piece was written expressly as a submission to Turner Classic Movies' Young Film Composers Competition. Out of four one-and-a-half-minute silent film clips to choose from, I chose a clip from "He Who Gets Slapped," a 1924 film with Lon Chaney. The scene is about a distraught clown who finally confronts the two men who ruined his life. He plans to unleash a lion upon them, which is waiting in a cage behind a door. He proposes a toast to "him who laughs last"; but the spooked men, who don't recognize him, say that they don't drink with fools. The clown throws his glass against the wall... and there ends the clip. |
