This piece was performed with a warped frequency vocoder using a percussion loop for the modulation source. The frequency warping allows various subbands of the modulation to affect entirely different subbands of the carrier. |

Story Behind the Song
An experiment in creative vocoding. This piece was performed using a Virus B as the carrier with one patch for the bass drone and a pad for the treble. I constructed a stereo linked dual 44-bank vocoder with frequency warping on both the carrier and the modulation source. The vocoder was constructed and operated on a Kyma workstation with 12 DSP's. Subsequent processing uses a crossover delay line with left and right channels set in the approximate ratio of 3:2, and not in step with the musical tempo. This helps create some ambiguity. A gentle phaser was also applied using a 10 second sweep. Finally, the sounds were compressed to bring the harmony in level with the percussive sounds. Mixing and finalizing was done on a PC with CoolEdit/Pro.
