You know that feeling you get when you find a 5 spot in your pants a couple of days after you washed 'em? Well,I consider this one my 10 spot.Front right poket of my most comfy 501's,all singles wrapped up tight in a rubber band, or "JBR" if you will. This is a mid tempo with a haunting melody that opens up in the chorus as the sun does after an afternoon storm.

    Story Behind the Song
This song was written with a very dear friend of mine and songwriting mentor Cliff Goldmacher. Cliff and I had been throwing around the idea of writing together off and on between recording sessions( I must tell you now that he makes unbelievable records in his studio which is based out of his walk-in-closet). We come from totally different backrounds musically but share the same admiration for great craft and artisrty. So one day,I think it was in March of '96, we sat in his "control room" and stared into our own personal creative voids. We had nothing to say. Nothing to unleash. Nada! Then I put down a drum loop in 6/8 and he played "a chord".At that moment, and clouds rolledback, the sun smiled upon the country side, the towns people poked out their weary heads in ahh.Kings and Queens, children of all ages, danced shouting out "REJOICE! REJOICE!"....maybe that was just me?
After we sat playing the loop and "the chord" over and over, it happend. Cliff spoke. "How are you feeling?" he asked."Dark." I said..."as in the deepest hour of night." That was catalyst to what is now my favorite song I've ever been a part of. It sat in a drawer for almost 3 years, in 6/8, I must add. We performed it once at Henry's on Boadway in Nashville. I started on the track with only a hazy memory of the changes...so I thought. Once the track was done, I put it on DAT and threw it back into the drawer. A friend of mine had a new mic to test and suggested I sing on it to test its' tonal characteristics. I had the DAT with me and decided to accompany myself in my testing. That was it. One take. The lyrics are close enough to what I thought they were, but it sounded pretty good to us. Cliff said it sounded fine so here it is. Enjoy the "Silence".
