    Story Behind the Song
This song was written in 1798 by Janet Findlayson, a Scotswoman, as she was waiting for her lover to come back from the Isle of Lewis. Somehow it migrated across the Irish Sea and was translated into Irish Gaelic. Kele got this Raithlin Island version from Niamh Parsons.

Lots of people who sing this song take for granted that the lover is going to be false. Personally, I don't feel that way. I think it's more about the feeling of sorrow of being separated from someone you love, particularly when surrounded by people who disapprove.

    Lyrics
Theid me' suas ar an croc is airde
Feach a bhfeic me' an fear a bha'ta
An dtig tu' annocht no' an dtig tu' amarach
'S no muna dtig tu' idir is trua ata' me'

    (curfa')
A fhir a bhata is na horo eile (3 X)
Cea'd mile failte gach ait a te tu'

    Ta' mo croise briste bruaite'
Is tric na deoir o mu shuile
An dtig tu' inniu' no' am bidh me suil leat?
No an druid me' an doraas le osna tuirseach?

Gheall mo leanann domh guna den tsioda
Gheall e' sin, agus breacan liat
Fainne oir anns an bhfeicfinn iomha
Ach is eagal liom go ndearn se' dearmad

Ta' mo croise ag dul in airde
Chan don findlier, chan don clairsoir
    Ach do Stuirithoir an bhata
Is muna dtig tu' abhaile, is trua ata' me'

    TRANSLATION

I'm going up to the high hill
To see if I could see the man in the boat.
Are you coming tonight? Or are you coming tomorrow?
If you don't come between the two, I'll be sad.

Man of the boat and no one else
A thousand welcomes wherever you go.

My heart is bruised and broken
It is frequently that tears come to my eyes
Will you come today, or will I look for you?
Or will I close the door with a tired sigh?

My love promised to give me a silk dress
He promised me the same, and a grey tartan
And a gold ring where I could see myself.
    I fear he has forgotten.

My heart lifts to the heights
not for the fiddler or the harper
but only for the navigator of the boat
If you don't come, how sad I'll be.
