Story Behind the Song
I began writing this late one windy November night, a few weeks after my 18th birthday. I had just restrung my nylon string guitar and was playing it while the wind loudly howled outside. I guess I was feeling a bit lonely, and I was also dreading having to get up real early the next morning to catch a plane back to my college. The combination of all this led to the mood of the song (even though I didn't actually finish the lyrics until the following summer.)
A few weeks before that windy and inspired night, a classmate told me he was writing a song called "Wondering Where You Are," and I remember thinking it was a rather bland sounding title. Little did I know I would end up using it myself.
As I said, the lyrics were completed in the summertime, and I remember early that summer I picked up a used copy of the Tommy James and the Shondells' 45 "Mirage." On the B-side was a neat little tune called "Run Run Baby Run," which I ended up playing quite a bit. I don't know for sure, but that might have been the reason for that exact title finding its way into the lyrics.
Originally, it was much more of a folk song, in a sort of Harry Chapin mode, but I've since arranged it into a more psychedelic piece.
Lyrics
As the night is getting older
And the winds are blowing colder
There's a weight upon my shoulder
'Coz I wish that you were near me
And I wish that you could hear me
'Coz right now I'm feeling weary
And I'm wondering where you are.
I remember our days together
Walking in the sunshine weather
How we thought they'd last forever
All the love you used to give me
How your kiss could really lift me
But right now you're not with me
And I'm wondering where you are
Oh where, where now could you be?
I'm sitting here in misery
Please run, run, baby, run to me
Come back to me
And ease my mind, treat me kind
Clear my head, give me love instead
'Coz I'm wondering where you are.
And now my life is battered
With each day I'm growing sadder
'Coz to you it doesn't matter
As the night is getting older
And the winds are blowing colder
And the weight's still on my shoulder
And I'm wondering where you are
I'm wondering where you are
I'm wondering where you are
I'm wondering where you are
