    Story Behind the Song
Years ago, my wife and I were both struggling to be full-time employees and full-time students at the same time. The biggest challenge was throwing our son, Douglas, into the mix. He was a really good kid, though.
I remember taking morning classes, working all afternoons and weekends and sometimes dragging Douglas to work with me because we couldn't afford a sitter beyond his normal daycare hours.
Oh, I was also playing in bands at that time. I have no clue how I accomplished all that.
Anyway, I built up quite a repertoire of what I thought were cool, sophisticated jazz fusion tunes and was trying to market them to publishers. It used to break my heart to see Douglas sitting in the studio by himself while I was recording songs. I was making some really unfair demands on a 4-year-old.
So one day, in an effort to cheer him up and help him feel included, I plopped myself down on the floor and "we" spontaneously composed a song called Bright Paintings. He was sooo proud.
Later, I was sitting around with the studio engineers listening to my new demo tape. When we were finished listening, Douglas walked up with a very disappointed look on his face. "Daddy, you didn't put Bright Paintings on the tape!"
Oh, what the hell. I decided to sacrifice my image and tack this naive little country tune onto the end of the tape.
Well, after a gazillion rejections, only one song ever got published and recorded by a small record label. Guess which one.

Once again I sacrifice my image to re-record something personal. ;)

    Lyrics
I like to look at bright paintings
cuz when they look back, they smile
I like to look at bright paintings
cuz when they look back, they smile

In my world there is no room for hate
tryin' to push its way in
And it's for heaven that I'll wait
I think worry is a sin

I like to look at bright paintings
cuz when they look back, they smile
I like to look at bright paintings
cuz when they look back, they smile

I like to swim around buck naked
    cuz it feels so cool
Just as long as there ain't nobody lookin'
    so I don't feel like a fool
