Seven minutes of salvation and suffering and God and happiness and the way pain makes us more complete sometimes... and how a great piece of art is sometimes just a consolation prize to what you really want. Definitely all the elements of a perfect pop song, I think...
CD: Drive Yourself Home: The Demos   Label: Desperate Man Records
Credits: Copyright 1998, Paradoxical Ironic Music/ASCAP. Acoustic guitar and vocal: Richard Challen.

    Story Behind the Song
6 in the morning... unable to sleep... wondering what I had done wrong (again)...
wondering if happiness is an unattainable goal best avoided... and then writing
it down like the act itself would make things better. It does, you know.
Lyrics in a few hours, music over a few weeks. This particular version is the demo version,
recorded in a bedroom on Sept. 30, 1998 in one take.

    Lyrics
    Swallow Up The Sadness

Sometimes it hurts to look at you
Sometimes it hurts to breathe at all
It hurts to lie in bed and realize you're not next to me
    By my side
Balled up like a baby underneath the covers
Shivering in the darkness and it's 6 a.m.
And I'm wide awake and praying for the good things
The good life The sweet dream The way it all goes wrong...
    But God ain't answering
He puts the cross on my back and He knows the weight is almost welcome
    Like when Jesus wept
Like He never said that we would be happy

He said I shouldn't be relying on you for the way that I’m feeling
No I shouldn't be relying on you for the way that I’m feeling
    That's why, that's why I want to

[swallow up the sadness in this world
take it all away from you my girl
swallow up the sadness in this life
take it far away from you tonight]

    Scraping off the rust
I swear that's how it felt the first time your hands were moving upon me
But then you looked away like you were scared
    Like you saw something there
Like I was wearing the mark of Cain
You know there's blood on my door
And the angels are passing over me
But I think that I would give up eternity
Just to feel my fingers brush the small of your back once more
And Jesus died for our sins
But He never said that we would be happy
He never promised us that we would be happy
...and I just wanted to be happy

Yeah I shouldn't be relying on you for the way that I’m feeling
But when there's nothing I can possibly do to change the way that I’m feeling
    I will try, I'll try until I

[swallow up the sadness in this world
take it all away from you my girl
swallow up the sadness in this life
take it far away from you tonight]
    But it never gets easier.

Sometimes I think I'm dashing myself on the rocks to get a better view of the wreckage
Killing off my bliss so I can sing about the pain
And the melody moves me in a way that seems to say
There's no way that we can ever stay happy
Like I made sure that I would never stay happy
I always swore that I would never be happy...
But I would give up all the songs I have yet to write
Just to feel my fingers brush the hair from your eyes
