Story Behind the Song
This song is usually attributed to Charles Wesley and first appeared anonymously in George Whitefields Hymn Book. It was probably published this way for good reason because scholars agree that Wesley wrote this praise hymn as an imitation of the English national anthem God save Our Gracious King. This national anthem had just been written and was popular throughout England. Come Thou Almighty King perhaps was Wesleys way of keeping priorities right.
Don makes sure to cover all of the ivories in praise hymn. Today, as people tend to revere their icons more than God, we can see that this song is more relevant than it ever has been.
The fact is, I just like playing this hymn! Just about every time I sit down to the piano to mess around you can be certain that this song will be played. It moves real good on the keyboard.
I have used this hymn regularly at church during the times we gather to praise God in song. Congregations love to sing this arrangement, so I knew I was going to include it as an mp3 offering.
Originally I had intended to put vocals into this arrangement, and I might yet. However, the instrumentals sounded so good on their own I decided to release Come Thou Almighty King as an instrumental for the Piano CD. So here it is! I pray that you enjoy it as much as I have.
Lyrics
Come, Thou Almighty King
Come, Thou Almighty King, help us Thy name to sing
Help us to praise:
Father all glorious, Oer all victorious,
Come, and reign over us, Ancient of Days.
Come, Thou Incarnate Word, Gird on Thy mighty sword,
Our prayer attend:
Come, and thy people bless, and give Thy word success:
Spirit of holiness, on us descend.
Come, Holy Comforter, Thy sacred witness to bear,
In this glad hour:
Thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart,
And neer from us depart, Spirit of powr.
The Thee, great One in three, eternal praises be,
Hence, evermore!
Thy Sovereign majesty may we in glory see,
And to eternity love and adore!
