The very first version of "Friends". Written in 1986 after a little spat with the DONT WALK band. They were my best friends ever. |

Story Behind the Song
After a small argument with the band,
I wrote this song on a bicycle working off
the adrenalin. I worked out all the parts
using my Commodore 64 with Dr. T's software.
I had a Roland TR-505 drum machine,
Sequential Circuits Six-Trac synth, and a
Casio CZ-101. I wrote and played all the
parts. The guitar on the lead is a 1957
Gibson ES-125 with an orginal wooden bridge. I digitally rescued this song from a cassette tape from 1986, which is why there are no highs left. I recorded better versions in the years to follow, which you'll also find on this site.
Lyrics
Friends don't always see things
quite the way I do
And Friends won't always be the
most perfect people in the world
And Friends don't all agree on
what is and what should be
But one thing that friends will always be
And that's Friends, Just Friends
No more no less, Just Friends
You may not like the words I write
or the tunes I sing for you
DONT WALK, don't crawl
just rise above it all
Everyone has their own right
to speak their own points of view
Now we might fight and we might brawl
but after all
We're just Friends, Just Friends
No more no less, Just Friends
People don't always play by the rules
They're gonna try and make you the fool
You need someone on whom you depend
Someone to see you through to the end
Now don't be acting like a stubborn old mule
Over something you think that might be uncool
Have a helping hand to lend
'cause what you need my friend, is a friend!
You need a friend, I need a friend
He needs a friend, she needs a friend
We all need a friend oh yeah
Don't pretend it's a trend
comprehend you depend on a friend
Transcend to the end lend a hand to a friend
I need a friend!
