Story Behind the Song
Greenwich Village in the late 60's and early 70's was like a magical music mecca for groups like The Lovin' Spoonful, The Blues Project, Blood Sweat & Tears, Genya Revan, Tim Hardin, Richie Havens and many more. Thousands of people filled MacDougal Street and West Third Street to be a part of a very special era.
Lyrics
Oh there was a time not long ago when I was seventeen. A time when all my friends and me were trying to make the scene. Oh we hung out on MacDougal Street until the day we found that beneath the street we hung out on was a heaven underground.
Are you going, going, going to The Underground yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh we went on down the stairs to see just what was happening. And like a magnet pulling steel the music pulled us in.
There were 15,000 on the street listening to the sound of the music playing beneath their feet in that heaven underground.
Are you going, going, going to The Underground yeah yeah yeah.
Oh we rock and rolled all through the night, I was happy as could be, there with all the friends i loved, hanging out for free.
But now the club that i once loved is just a memory. For where "The Underground" once stood now stands an Olive Tree.
