This song was born out of grief, joy and a pure love for a child that has been a bigger blessing than ever thought possible. God knew what we needed, and even though we wouldn't have chosen to have Phillip struggle so, we delight in his every accomplishment, and attempt to overcome each challenge with him. He has a smile that makes anyone who sees it smile too, a laugh that is too contagious, and a calling that none will understand. When you look into this child's eyes, you truly see the love of God.It is my prayer that this song be an encouragement to those of you with a special needs child, a special need of your own, or friends and loved ones that are affected by a disability. We may not always understand the reasons "why," but God does have a great plan for each of us. All of us are challenged in one way or another, and those that have a special need are no more challenged than anyone else is; and that is to be all that we can; and to bring God all the praise and glory for all of it! |

Story Behind the Song
Phillip Wayne Conrad was born on April 26, 1995 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, thirteen weeks before his due date. He and his twin brother, Patrick Steven, were miracles from God. Patrick weighed in at 1 pound 14 ounces, and Phillip weighed in at 2 pounds 7 ounces. They were lucky to be alive.
Patrick was a "tiny but mighty" preemie; but Phillip suffered many major complications. During the 4th week of his life, we learned that Phillip had a massive bleed to the brain. It was called grade 3 hydrocephalus, and suddenly our lives were filled with words like brain damage and cerebral palsy. Although we had stood on Phillipians 1:6, which simply states that He who began a good work in you will be able to complete it, ever since the boys were born, we found ourselves wondering what the Lord had in store. We would not find out what challenges lay before us for another several months.
As the boys began developing, it was obvious that Phillip was not at the same level as his brother physically. By his 1st birthday, Phillip was unable to hold his head up, sit on his own, speak the words of a typical year old child; and he was making no signs of improvement. The doctors alluded to cerebral palsy, but wouldn't commit to that diagnosis until he was 3.
When the diagnosis was actually given, we were stunned with the reality of it. There were moments of absolute insanity in our home during those days, and I often wondered if I was going to lose my mind; or drive Steve crazy. We tried desperately to hold onto God, and even in our weakness, God remained constant.
We have had a chain of therapists in our home since the early days, and have made many overseas trips for therapy, but we have always believed that God was the only one who could provide Phillip with complete healing. We believe that He has that power! And if it is His will, Phillip will walk, talk, and someday lead many to the Lord. He has made many great strides of progress in the past five years. He is learning to control his body, and although he isn't walking yet, we feel that someday he will; but only in the Father's time. He is also learning how to speak; this comes very slowly, and is probably the most difficult part of the CP, but each hurdle is another reason to celebrate. I am waiting for the day when I hear the word Momma. In the mean time, the "eyaooo" (I love you) is music to my ears. Having Phillip walk would be wonderful, but to have him communicate.

Lyrics
Verse 1:
When he was given his first life's breath
It was a struggle indeed
But God was gracious and He had a plan
So in him he planted a seed
Verse 2:
God gave us joy and God gave us peace
That He would use our son
To be a man to spread His word
And to show God's love to everyone
Chorus:
He cannot walk but he is a witness
He cannot speak but testifies
To the world he is far from perfect
But you can see God when you look into his eyes
Verse 3:
Day by day he is getting stronger
A blessing sent from above
We're learning so much more about Jesus
We're learning so much more about love
Repeat chorus
Bridge:
There's a playground in his dreams
Where he plays with other children
Every night he makes the winning score
But in the Father's time there will be a day
When he won't have to dream it anymore
He won't have to dream it anymore
Repeat chorus to end
