    Story Behind the Song
This was one of the first real collaborations we ever did. Usually when we write a song, one person comes up with the skeleton of how a song should go. Then changes and/or additions are made the other members until the song is done, with all said changes/additions meeting the approval of whomever created the skeleton. The process allows for the individual members of From Angels To Ashes to flex creative muscle without having to contend with the other members' egos. This process also allows us to dabble in many genres and attempt different kinds of songs, so long as all the songs qualify as "good" to each one of us. As unlikely as it may sound, we very rarely have fights over which songs are "good."

    Lyrics
    Black Letter Is Fading

Smile pretty, 'cause the memory never fades.
My surroundings, I want them to fade away.
    Don't say a word, the meaning may come out wrong;
I look for something, for something that won't lastlong.
You're like a beacon, a source for my sense of self.
You're everyone, yet apart from everybody else,
saying things that you know that I want to hear.
We meet, your eyes like a window that shows no fear.
So many games that the people around you play.
You're forgetting what you were like yesterday.
You're just a sheep in wolf's clothing, can't you see?
You try so hard to, so hard to be just like me.
Do you need someone to tell you why it feels so wrong?
Why do you have this feeling that you don't belong?
Laugh or cry, you're not sure which you want to do.
There must be something, somewhere inside, that'strue.
Black Letter wanna keep me in a cage, forgotten with the turning of another page.
But no words could ever disguise this rage
(And I've got something for every one.)Black Letter, try to control me,
in denial of reality that I see.Always saying what they think is right for me!
(And I've got something for every one.)
You say you need some time to be by yourself,
unexpected and rejected -- just like everyone else.
The blind leading behind with intent to deceive,
and you don't know who you are or what to believe.
Take the time to consider your current state
(the type of thinking that Black Letter eradicates).
Discarded like an old toy, left upon a shelf,
just carry on, be strong, and take care of --yourself.Chorus
Maybe as we're coming down we can't be saved.
All the wretched and impure things, now saved fromgrace.Alone in your mystery,
alone in your divide, your vengeance is wastedand so is my time.
No fear, no way to make you see it like I.Black Letter is fading.
Black Letter is dead.Black Letter is fading, Black Letter is dead and gone.
