    Story Behind the Song
This song was inspired by the American school shootings in recent years. It is a commentary on the psychological state of Americans: the numbing of youth, propensity to violence, and avoidance of personal responsibility. As an American living overseas for eight years, this is my perspective based on the news I get from home.

    Lyrics
    The Things I Do

Sunset and the world is tired
    All's quiet in the twilight
    I'm staring at the ceiling
Having fantasies and dreams and memories that seem so real

On a yellow mattress in a crack house
watching motes of dust in beams of light
hide in shadows on the ceiling
please don't raise your voice; she can exercise her choice to feel

Refrain: I don't know why I do the things I do

In a bedroom in the suburbs
there's a boy cold and numb
    lying sleepless with a shotgun
Thinking it through again; they won't ignore him when he comes for them

Got an idea of the way my life should be
based on something I saw on TV
    about how to be guilt-free
while my godforsaken home burns just like Rome while it sleeps

    (refrain)

I've heard people say that we're all just born this way
it was in your mother's milk, and that's the way we'll stay
and then people say that it's the product of the rage
that is born of the despair in the children of this age
who are visited and preyed upon by phantom memories of things
    that never happened

lying on my bed in the darkness
wandering the maze of my mind
I could go left, I could go right
    it's all up to me
    I'm absolutely free
    the chances that I take
and the choices that I make
are ever-widening ripples that touch everything
    and change the world

    (refrain)
