Story Behind the Song
7th Track of the concept album "Lost In Love" Each track belongs to a chapter of a short story. Here is Nr.7:
Welcome To The Blue Age
She stood in front of what used to be a great movie palace. Windows and doors were boarded shut, with the exception of a small passageway. Walking up a few steps, Layla forced herself through. She now stood in the hall. A bird rose, disturbed by her presence, and flew hurriedly to the exit. For one moment the hall seemed to be teeming with life, young wives pulling their husbands to the popcorn stand, cigarette-girls displayed their wares on trays strapped in front of them.
And then all was quiet again. Drops of water breaking the silence. There was a glow of light at one end of the hall and Layla carefully walked towards it. There actually was an old lady sitting behind the counter in the glow of a dim light solving crossword puzzles. She looked up as Layla got closer and tore a ticket off the roll. "That's 50 cents! Hurry up, the introduction is already over."
Armed with a flashlight she led Layla to the entrance, pulled back the grimy, moth-eaten curtain and nearly pushed her inside. "Hurry up! Please!"
Inside it was comfortably warm. Besides, the decay seemed to stop at the doorway. It even smelled like fresh paint. The red velvety seats looked new and the decoration under the ceiling was contrasted with gold paint. Slowly the lights dimmed and the curtain opened. Layla hurried to get to the middle. She was the only person in the audience, so she could sit were she chose.
The screen stayed dark as the music started. Somewhere in the distance Earth appeared and slowly came closer. No, it wasn't earth that came closer: You were looking out of a spaceship. And there were others that slowly drifted past, some had strange organic forms, others colorful designs and blinking lights. They all were headed towards Earth, passing the moon with its colonies.
The music became louder and the title appeared: Welcome to the Blue Age.
The camera was now showing pictures from earth of what seemed to be a great festival. People are dancing to beautiful, but strange music and are singing in an unknown language. Suddenly the picture changes to the inside of a TV studio. It's a talk show. From right to left: Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, the hostess, Phil Marlowe, Jimi Hendrix. The hostess must have just posed a question, which is being answered by each of the guests.
Janis: "Wow, I never thought that that would really happen. I was just doing what I felt at the time. I never thought we had a chance!"
Marlowe: "I never had had a chance and I did everything to use it. Sometimes the good must fail, in order for the bad to see that there is something other than them. I was often beat, but always came out looking better than those beating me."
Morrison: "It was all poetry, we didn't have anything else. It was only an idea, but we followed it and paid the price. I always had wanted to break through to the other side, but you guys really did it!"
Hendrix: "It was all because of this crazy music - good music is like sex, you can't go on without it. And for my part, I will continue." Host: "These were beautiful closing words on the eve of the 100th anniversary of Woodstock. What a few crazy dreamers started with their visions back then is ultimately what gave humanity a new direction generations later. The time of blossoming began, as we all know, we the change of the financial world in 2023, after capitalism had failed, like communism did before it. After that interests had to be paid if one collected wealth, and those who lent money and made a profit of doing so, received interest. The dealing of currencies and stock became illegal. Generally those who produced goods received more than those who were merely selling the wares.
But every kid knows this. These simple rules are still today the essence of our great era, also finally realizing the dream of space travel."
The following were scenes from Earth, empty streets. Every once in a while a vehicle could be seen that resembled '57 Chevys and similar cars. A short movie about America, were a few crazy men reopened transit between the east and west coasts with old steam locomotives from the 40s. The idea was so well received, that in a months time, a second locomotive had to be put in service.
Then a report from Bavaria, Germany: After the death of King Edmund in 2015, Bavaria decided to join the World Union as one of the last remaining countries, but still before Iran joined. It took years before the bavarians really accepted the opening to the world. The Moslems had to change their views abruptly, when in 2016 scrolls were discovered, that concluded that 'The Prophet' was actually a woman writing in her meek husbands name, conforming to the pressure of the historical society.
In between: shots of faces. Faces without the look of of resignation, that was omnipresent in Layla's world. The last images and music faded. Slowly the lights went on again and the exit opened automatically, inviting her to continue her journey. Still somewhat taken by the images she headed towards the door. In many theaters one enters through a friendly entrance, only to be thrown afterwards into a small alley.
Where would this door take her?
