Story Behind the Song
Part of the concept album Lost In Love. Each track is also a chapter of the short story. Here is chapter 3:
3. It's a (Cyber) Jungle out There
She opened the door onto the street. Everything was different. What had been an empty, dark alley, swarmed with people. It was early morning. Foreign-looking vendors offered food at small stands. She went a ways to the left, and when she glanced back, the door she had come through had vanished. She also noticed out of the corner of her eye a shadow on the wall that seemed to follow her. Layla walked faster: She began to run. A glance back confirmed what she already knew: She was being followed. The crowd became thicker. Rickshas and stinking old cars crossed her path. She kept running into people. The people acted somehow oddly detached, almost uninvolved. Many wore bright cheerful robes the likes of which she had never seen before. They didn't seem to nitice the shadow from which she was
fleeing. She would have liked to eat something from one of the stands. It smelled of spices and grilled food. Who or whatever was following her appeared to gain on her.
Layla's lungs felt like they were about to burst. Her legs became ever heavier and still she managed to call on reserves she hadn't realized
existed. The shadow now appeared right in front of her. She dared not look back. Instead she ducked into a tiny side alleyway. Just as she thought she had lost the shadow, what little light there was in the dark alley dimmed. Even worse, she realized that the alley was a deadend. Fifty meters ahead of her rose the wall of a house. At the foot of the wall was a waterhole with an entrance and railings like those of a swimming pool. A warning sign read: The Ultimate Experience, Only for the Brave.
There was no choice. Layla grabbed the rails with both hands and stepped into the streaming water and pushed herself off. She began to backstroke through the darkness, faster and faster until she lost consciousness.
