    Story Behind the Song
One of those days when everything goes right.

Back in the early seventies, I was touring with my band. We did a number of recording sessions at Chess Studios in Chicago and on this particular day, I was just in the neighborhood driving by. Chess was owned by Staxx Records and one amazing place to see. It was an eight-story building that was 100% music business. The 1st floor was a pressing plant where the vinyl records were pressed. The top of the building was WVON radio station. There was a floor that would shoot pictures of the band and design record covers. State of the art 2,3,4 and 8 track studios where some of the biggest names in the business recorded. You could walk in to Chess with a song idea, get it recorded and the same day have your new record hit the streets all shrinkwrapped and playing on the radio before you left the building.

On this day, I wondered into the 4-track studio and noticed a guitar case on the floor next to the piano. It caught my attention right away because it looked so familiar. I walked over to it and opened it to find a Gibson Stereo guitar inside. It was mine!!! I had left it there a year ago and thought it had gotten stolen out of our tour buss. Inside the case were pictures that I had taken during the last session including myself with the producer. So there was no question, it was mine and I got it back.

Dave Purple was our engineer and he came up to me and said "you wanna hear something really great?" He pulled me into the 8-track studio. He was very excited about this latest project. I listened for a couple minutes. The 8-track studio had 8 wall mounted Voice of the Theater speakers all lined up one next to the other. They could switch the speaker configuration to 2 track stereo or each of the 8 speakers with it's own individual track. I have never heard anything as fabulous as all 8 tracks on separate amps and speakers. WOW!!! Dave says "How do you like the band? It's a movie track called Shaft" It was unbelievable. I hadn't even heard of Isaac Hayes at that time but I knew I would forget him. He went on to receive numerous awards for the Movie track and Dave Purple got an award for Engineer of the year.

It was a great day for me too.
